A highly selective vacation resort, Vestalanium attracts people of wealth, people looking to hide, and people with something to hide. Thus, all the Player Characters end up there, looking forward to a chance to not have to kill or be killed.
They are hosted by Gaius Phillipus, a former legionnaire of the Legion of the Reluctant Warrior and Quintus' contebernium. He assigns his best slave, Tula, to show the PCs around town.
It becomes obviously quickly that something is not right. From little Nelaria bashing her kitten to death, to the mad slave Samara cutting herself, our heroes get the impression that the pending play known as Adventus Regis will end badly. Sebastian Arnyal warns Thralen Vodric val'Ossan to keep Emric at Gaius' resort. Thralen obeys his wishes.
The PCs get on a pleasure barge powered by slaves, only to have the trip interrupted when one of the slaves goes mad. When they finally return to Vestalanium, it is in the death throes of utter madness.
Fleshripper possesses Kham val'Abebi and he becomes obsessed with retrieving his pistols. He hacks his way through the city, slaying sane and insane alike. At one point, Calactyte intercepts a wagon full of burning oil, nearly dying from his wounds. Thralen holes himself up in Kham's room and uses Kham's pistols to defend himself, only throwing the val into an insane rage. Sebastian's magic finally brings Kham down long enough for Thralen to explain: a byakhee kidnapped Emric.
The PCs are in hot pursuit. They arrive at the arena just in time. Byakhee bring down Calactyte and Kham. Sebastian engages in a knife fight with Dulius Decula. In the mean time, IlmarÄ— and Colia Thalna engage in a war of words. Bijoux kills Dulius with on sling stone, then a byakhee with the other. The remaining byakhee helps Livius Carbo escape with a complete copy of the King in Yellow. As the star of Aldebaran rises, the former corpse of Octavius is released by the Unspeakable One.
In the end, Emric is saved. But at what cost to Onara's future?
