Quintus Aurelius Ignatius, Kham val'Abebi, and IlmarÄ— Galen are invited to a party by Elandre val'Assante, with the express purpose of revealing Acastus val'Assante's plans for her wedding. Elandre doesn't want to marry Rurik val'Tensen, but she suspects there's more to it.

At the subsequent party, Kham sneaks into Acastus' room and discovers the truth--Rurik is supposed to publicly reject Elandre, thereby saving face for both the val'Tensens and val'Assantes, since Emperor Calsestus ordered the marriage. But, in the heat of the moment, Rurik sees Elandre for the first time and his loins overpower his brain. He publicly agrees to the marriage.

Acastus is enraged. But before he can reverse the decision, he is assassinated by Brendis, one of Rurik's entourage. Quintus tracks down Brendis and after discovering that he is a fanatical Nierite, slits his throat.

In the end, IlmarÄ— and Quintus must teach Rurirk a lesson about love and marriage. It makes them think about their own relationship and what may lie ahead.
