After translating the first volume of Octolibri Ex Videlicetunus, titled Ambrose, Lucius discovers an invitation hidden in its pages. Convinced that it is something dire, and perhaps jogging his memory from his possession with the k'n-yan, Lucius entrusts Calactyte to deliver the message to IlmarÄ— Galen.
In the mean time, Quintus Aurelius Ignatius has been missing for weeks. It turns out that a local Illirite cleric named Parsippus enlisted Quintus to reclaim an old church. But the two got more than they bargained for: the Brotherhood of the Yellow Sign had taken over the church. Their leader, Khorbon, and his gnome assistants killed Parsippus and tortured Quintus in an effort to drive him completely mad.
Calactyte's efforts to drop off the note were interrupted by Harcourt, Resseka, Chemb, and Claret. Cal slaughtered Chem in the street and finally handed the note back to IlmarÄ—.
Harcourt unintentionally led the Player Characters to the church, so they entered, only to be attached by clockwork marionettes. IlmarÄ— suspects these things are the result of Ambrose's tinkering.
After foiling several traps, freeing Quintus, and navigating a maze, the three heroes face down Khorbon and Whillispur. Then Ambrose activates his clockwork minotaur.
Just as IlmarÄ— is about to be killed, she presents the invitation to Ambrose. Satisfied that he can now return to Carcosa, Ambrose uses his flying orrery and clockwork minotaur to open a portal to the Far Realm and leaves.
Ultimately, the cult has been stopped again, but at what cost? Quintus discovers a strange machine that Ambrose sketched for the brotherhood--that machine would be an integral component in grinding up and crushing magical bricks for Milton's Folly, drastically increasing the speed at which the lighthouse can be built. It also proves to be a terrible death trap.
