Emric was switched at birth with Camring, Sycorax's child. As a result, the sea hag is the only mother he's ever known. When asked what his mother looked like, Emric pointed at Calactyte.
His real mother, Tivatia Ossan-Drac, eventually died of grief when her child did not seem to recognize her. Upon her death, she learned the truth. Filled with an unholy rage, Tivatia was determined to see her son returned to his family.
It took ten long years before Tivatia finally determined the whereabouts of her true child. She possessed Captain Wendron Krubach and attacked Sycorax's island lair. The fight did not go well.
Captain Krubach's ship, the Black Egret, was destroyed. All men went down with the ship. Only Emric survived.
Thus ensued a three-way struggle between the Player Characters, Milton Drac, and Sycorax to claim the boy (or kill him). Hapless Emric, who is not wise in the ways of politics, was in way over his head.
Eventually, the whole mess was sorted out, but it became clear to Emric's guardian, Thralen Vodric, that it was not safe for the boy in Freeport. He claimed he was taking Emric to Milandir, but that was another lie to cover his tracks. Instead, he brought Emric to a secret holiday resort in Coryan known as Vestalanium.
It was there that the Yellow Sign was transcribed for the first time, creating the play, The King in Yellow. Although Emric was kidnapped as a sacrifice to the Unspeakable One, his strange upbringing mentally prepared him for the awful experience.
Thralen had a change of heart. Perhaps it WAS better to have the boy in Freeport, where he at least had some allies nearby. They're on their way back to Freeport. With Milton Drac dead, maybe it's time for young Emric to stake his claim...
