Quintus Aurelius Ignatius decides to undertake a peculiar task: Caravans are being ambushed, and Gratian val'Holryn wants him to find the source. In addition, as a representative of the Sanctorum of the Arcane, Gratian asks for the retrieval of a certain box.

Quintus and his comrades use a false caravan as bait and follow the hobgoblin hijackers to their lair. There, they discover a hidden fortress in the Forsaken Wastes. Quintus and Kham val'Abebi infiltrate the fortress, only to be spotted and fight for their lives.

They discover a series of prophecies, along with an Encali dwarf named Jarel. Before they can do anything else, a Spawn of Tizzhet is released. Kham uses Quintus' necklace of fireballs to kill it.

In the end, House Otrecto is discredited. As punishment, Quintus gets a share of their farmland. He finally has a place to call home.
