Kham val'Abebi visits Solanos Mor to get rid of Fleshripper once and for all, only to discover that it must become more powerful before he can release it. Worse, Jarel has the only gem that can do the job.
At the same time, Alsef, Elabac's apprentice, has concerns about Jarel and asks Beldin to investigate. Sure enough, Jarel betrays Elabac to the Reavers, who then turn the tables and make the kidnapping look like an attack by the Encali clan instead.
Leading the Reavers is Lorund Ranenor, a Nol Dappan dwarf. When he sees Vlad Martell trying to rescue Elabac, he flies into a rage. Fortunately, Fleshripper intercepts his vengeance and causes Kham to flashback to a different time in the blade's history. When it's all over, Lorund is dead, Elabac is rescued, and Alsef's soul shard has been shattered.
Beldin is named Elabac's new apprentice and Kham has a new, angrier Fleshripper. For a happy ending, nobody seems very happy about it.
