Vlad Martell is called back to Moratavia by Duke Adolphos val'Tensen to carry out a simple apology to a local bard. The task is Vlad's punishment for not sharing certain intelligence he gathered while in the Forsaken Wastes.

In the mean time, Nauris Drilian tracks Cael Greybeard from Freeport to Milandir, where he discovers that the master bard is telling the tale of The King in Yellow. Cael witnessed the Yellow Sign projection from Milton's Folly and, incensed that a tree was not dedicated to him by Adolphos, decided to use his powers for evil.

The Player Characters track Cael from one town to another, each driven more insane than the last. They finally reach the Duke's castle, which has begun to merge with Carcosa in the Far Realm. There, they discover that Cael is actually a disguised elorii, a Knight of the Order of the Twelve Oaks of Belisarda. Vlad convinces Cael to fight to save Moratavia, and at the last moment the elorii banishes the King in Yellow, destroying himself in the process.

Arcanis is healed and time warps backwards, erasing all evidence of the week the Unspeakable One nearly returned.
