Whoever Herbert was in life, it's unlikely he was as effective as he became in death. As a servant to Tomas Hariot, Herbert's sole job was to bury corpses and unearth them at his master's whim.
It was thanks to Herbert that the Player Characters were surrounded by undead when they descended upon Tomas' lair. It wa thanks to Herbert that Beldin was knocked nearly into unconsciousnes--twice, thanks to Herbert's shovel. Even Kham succumbed to Herbert's entombing abilities.
Eventually, Sebastian Arnyal took Herbert down with his magic. Herbert would have smiled as he died (again), if he could.
