The Player Characters are invited to join Menisis val'Tensen on the Imperial Hunt of the Howling Bear. At the val'Tensen estates, they hobknob with the rich and famous, nearly offending their host when Ilmare is given a elephant figurine to offer as a gift. Fortunately, Quintus intervenes in the nick of time.
That night, an assassin attempts to drug Attalus val'Virdan with helvasta, a drug known to make men go mad. Kham defeats the assassin and uncovers the plot. It's also at this time that Sebastian Arnyal has a brief affair with Oriena val'Sheem, who has a fondness for dark-kin.
They continue on the hunt the next morning, though Menisis is called away on other business. Instead, Gaius val'Tensen leads the hunt, to the dismay of everyone involved. They travel beyond the val'Tensen estates into Ulfia, only to be ambushed by hobgoblins. Gaius is kidnapped and Oriena is wounded in the attack. Attalus takes her back to the estate, leaving the heroes to pursue the hobgoblins.
Their pursuit leads to a conflict with the hobgoblin leader, who wields Fleshripper and nearly kills Quintus Aurelius Ignatius with it. Kham picks it up...and will never be the same again.
In an ancient Auxunite temple, Kham discovers the Collar of Khidam, a boon for the Emerald Society. Unfortunately, he falls prey to the trap guarding it and is turned to stone. It take's Ilmare and Quintus to rescue him from an eternity as a statue.
The hobgoblins have another prisoner, Qolwa val'Abebi, whom Kham claims is his uncle. They discover that someone known as the Vivisectionist (possibly Lucius Orata) is performing experiments on val, and that Gaius is to be sacrificed for the sake of science. One of those experiments is a former member of the Legion of the Reluctant Warrior and member of Quintus' contubernium, Helena Vorosa. She has been transformed into a four-armed monstrosity that Quintus must personally destroy.
Strange puppets tell cultists of Larissa what to do, and they ultimately awaken a Beloved of Larissa, who immediately attacks. Kham is engulfed by it, only to rip his way out with Fleshripper. This is the first time we see Fleshripper in action and understand the power it can bestow on its wielder.
Ilmare begins to look at Quintus in a different light, recognizing his loyalty for a fallen comrade. Sebastian burns the offensive bible of the Larissan cult. Despite that, Oriena invites Sebastian to travel with her to Sweet Savona.
