The Last Resort

Egil sends a note to Kham val'Abebi, imploring him to return to Freeport to act as a character witness for Lucius. Lucius has been accused of the murder of his father and sister by Lucius' brother, Grahame Roby, who is surprised Lucius is not already in prison. It seems Lucius did some awful things while he was possessed.

The adventurers leave from Sulfurmarsh with Edward captaining the Shrike. What they didn't realize is that Edward stole a ssanu mummy, known as a samat, from the ancient ruins and planned to sell it.

IlmarÄ— Galen and Beldin Soulforge are told to meet Egil in front of the Freeport Opera House. While there, they end up watching a rendition of The King in Yellow, written by Talbot Estus. The crowd goes mad. Beldin gets beaten into unconsciousness by the Sea Lord's Guard. IlmarÄ— is nearly arrested, but Kham manages to free her thanks to judicious use of his Order of Drac. When it doesn't work for Beldin, Kham resorts to gunplay instead.

They rejoin Sebastian Arnyal and Egil at The Last Resort, a much fancier establishment owned by Bobbin and Edgar Brandydale, the original owners of the Pale Plate. The two hope to drum up business by allowing the Countess d'Amberville to host a masquerade ball for the after-party of the play, The Queen and the Stranger. They also hope to get more customers through Henry Tranco, who is hosting a high-stakes game of Three-Dragon Ante.

It turns out that there's a lot more than just the Player Characters at The Last Resort. Aljandros Haddon discovers that his wife, Imelda, is having an affair with Thomas Rhymer and threatens to kill the man. Fortunately, Sebastian intervenes.

Egil is targeted by two rival cults of the Brotherhood of the Yellow Sign. Disorganized and confused, they stumble into a trap laid by Beldin and Sebastian, who make quick work of them.

It turns out that Egil paid the PCs before by borrowing money from the crimeboss known as Finn of the Gnome Benevolent Association. Egil's already lost a pinky and has no means to pay Finn back. It's up to Kham to find the money. He gets some of it through Tranco's game, although Sebastian practically loses his shirt.

IlmarÄ— lures Talbot Estus, the author of The Queen and the Stranger, to a room and leaves him there. Thugs sent by Finn end up beating up Talbot and later being beaten up by Sebastian and Beldin.

While trying to discover just what Edward is selling to Elijah Quelch, a shady antiques dealer, Kham bumps into Jesswin in the middle of a theft/assassination. It turns out she is attempting to seal the Sign of Drac off of Thralen Vodric val'Ossan's hand. She also poisons poor Emric. Fortunately, Kham saves them both in the nick of time and foils Jesswin's plans for a second time.

Eventually, Kham gets around to discovering what Edward stole: a ssanu mummy known as a samat. The samat drains Kham's life energy and much of the flessh off of his arm, springing to life and killing Edward. It blazes a destructive path to the docks and disappears.

Shortly thereafter, Captain Baldric, who was waiting for Edward to show up, is attacked by the ghost of Captain Wendron Krubach. Though defeated, Krubach's ghost vows revenge.

Sebastian realizes that Talbot will continue writing books about the King in Yellow and spreading insanity. He discovers a book written by Lucius Roby written in Milandisian and titled "The Walker in the Lake". With no other choice, Sebastian kills Talbot and covers it up.

Finally, Kham settles accounts. He takes the remaining Valossan treasures from Edward's room and, with Baldric's permission, sells them to Falthar of Falthar's Curios. Then, with enough money to cover the 10,000 gold doubloons that Egil owes Finn, he meets with the crimeboss. Ironically, Finn takes the one thing Kham didn't think to leave with him: the Order of Drac.
